Sometimes our children need extra support in figuring out how to handle problems that they can’t quite cope with on their own. Parents and guardians are vital resources for children, but having an outside resource to connect with and to work with them through challenges that affect how they feel and act, can provide an additional layer of support for their development.
Our therapists are skilled in play-therapy and art-therapy techniques that will engage your child in a one-on-one manner in order to help them focus on building important skills and working through challenging processes. Our therapists will keep you informed throughout their work with your child and as the parent/guardian, the therapist may request to schedule separate sessions to review ideas for how to help your child at home.
The teenage years are filled with challenges. They stem from building independence while finding a healthy balance between seeking relationships with family members and developing autonomy. Navigating mental health challenges, maintaining a good parent-child relationship, relationships with friends or significant others, academic stress, and managing substance use are only a few of the difficult tasks that are associated with the teenage years. Therefore, it can often be very helpful for your child to connect with an outside resource with which he or she can build a trusting relationship.
At Spot to Talk we are committed to building a supportive and non-judgmental relationship with your child to provide him/her with a safe space where they can communicate about the challenges they are experiencing. This unique confidential relationship that our therapists have the honor of building with your child, can provide the one-on-one environment needed for your child to honestly discuss the challenges they are facing and allow them to increase the skills needed to successfully navigate the teen years. While the information shared in these sessions is primarily confidential, our therapists will have routine communication with you and are always available for additional family therapy sessions as needed.
Family therapy can be an essential element to addressing the challenges that you or a member of your family is experiencing. Often the challenges that we face not only affect us as an individual, but also impact the family system as a whole. Family therapy can provide a safe space to communicate about challenging topics with guidance from your therapist.
Group therapy is a great way for your child to connect with a small group of individuals who are experiencing similar challenges. Participating in group therapy allows your child to not only connect with the therapist facilitating the group, but also with other participants who have had similar life experiences. Group therapy can be a wonderful way to feel connected to others while also learning from others’ experiences. Groups are offered based off the needs of our current clientele. If you are interested in having your child attend a group, please let us know in your interest form.
Crisis Consultation can be helpful if your child is experiencing significant emotional distress without actually being in a physically dangerous situation.* A Crisis Consultation is typically booked within 3 hours of your child’s appointment time, but without guaranteeing that you will be able to meet with your child’s primary Spot to Talk therapist. We cannot always guarantee the availability of these sessions, and recommend that if you are concerned about your child harming him/herself or someone else, or if you are feeling unsafe in your environment, to please call 911 or visit your local emergency room. If the mental health crisis you are experiencing is not dangerous, but you wish to speak with a Spot to Talk therapist as soon as possible, please request a Crisis Consultation Appointment by calling 619-438-0690.
*A physically dangerous crisis situation includes suicidal behaviors or threats, homicidal behaviors or threats, irrational dangerous behaviors, or excessive consumption of alcohol or drugs. If you are not certain whether the situation represents immediate danger, please err on the side of caution and call 911.
